About us
Brno Be Love is a new cultural and social movement responding to the need for deeper connection between the Czech and Ukrainian communities in Brno and its surroundings. It is based on the belief that culture has the power to connect where words are no longer enough. Through art we seek ways to share experiences and listen to each other. By connecting our cultures, we build security between people who now share a home. The project will culminate in the Be Love Festival, which will take place on 21 – 24 August 2025 in Brno as a celebration of humanity, understanding and openness. At a time when the world is often divided by borders, we want to create a space in Brno where trust is born instead of fear – and where love is not just a word, but an act of kindness.

Grey bees
Cinema Art (Cihlářská 19) – small hall
18:00
(trailer / web / CSFD / IMDb)
There are only two left. In a remote village without electricity, stuck in the “grey zone” that emerged in the Donbas after the Russian invasion in 2014, only two remain, former childhood enemies, later colleagues from the mine, now pensioners. Their windows – and their views of the world – face the opposite direction: one to the east, the other to the west. Each imagined life differently. But when a Russian sniper appears in the village and the threat of an offensive grows stronger, they both face an inevitable choice: adapt or resist.
FRIDAY 22. 8. - Day of understanding

Honeymoon
Cinema Art (Cihlářská 19)
18:00
No one is ready to wake up to explosions outside the window – no plan, no future. Trapped in their own apartment in the middle of an occupied city, a young couple must rediscover fear, despair, love and hope. They were to live that month as their honeymoon. Instead, they face war.
Opening

Johana Merta
“OVER ALL POSSIBILITIES 2”
This is the title of the second exhibition by Johana Merta, which is dedicated to promoting relations between Czechs and Ukrainians. Merta wants to follow up last year’s exhibition in Lviv, Ukraine, in September 2024.

The ground floor of the House of Art will be a strategically composed environment for people to meet and share. Johana Merta’s artistic work has no fixed boundaries, this “experimental nature” of her works is her freedom and her handwriting. Her current work focuses on communication tools and relational ties in society. She guides the installation through a discussion of cultural habits and perception of materials. With its content, the exhibition project aims to promote the relationships between natives and refugees in contemporary Europe. Thus, to create an environment that is safe for all. Even if everything it offers has its limits.

“HERBARIUM OF BURNT LANDSCAPE”
Glass objects, glass fusing
2024
These herbaria are plants burnt in a muffle furnace between two glasses,
collected in the Ukrainian steppes. Burned at over 750 degrees,
their remains and ashes tell a story of literal destruction
Ukrainian landscapes by fire during wartime events. The glass highlights
the fragility of these territories and becomes a document of the crimes that Russia
committed on the Ukrainian landscape.
- Guided tour (CZ/UA)
- the exhibition will run until 17.9.

“BENTEHA”
The project Než válka skončí / Do Закінчення Війни is realised by the Tripitaka association in the Brno Prison. It uses the tools of community work to respond to the arrival of a large number of people who fled the war in Ukraine to Brno. Its main goal is to facilitate the adaptation of these newcomers to a new cultural and social environment, to dispel cultural prejudices, to build mutual trust and to alleviate the social isolation of the newcomers.
The project focuses on the activation and empowerment of newcomers from the Ukrainian community. It enables them to name their own needs and engage in their fulfilment. It improves communication between newcomers, local institutions and the general public. A key part of the project is the creation of community theatre performances involving people with refugee experience themselves. Professional theatre practitioners help them to translate their often dramatic life stories and experiences into the form of a play.
The first of these performances is Benteha / Bentega. The title of the production is based on the Ukrainian word “benteha”, which describes a prolonged state of restlessness and tension. These feelings permeate the entire performance, which captures the personal accounts of young people from Ukraine. Fragments of monologues, movement scenes and poetry reflect their life in a foreign land, memories of home and hope for the future.
“The audience will see authentic testimonies that are very personal for us and for the participants. We tried to capture how their perception of war, identity and new environment is changing,” explains dramaturg Matěj Nytra. Director Max Nowotarski adds. They choose what they want to say and how they want to say it. Our role is to be curators of their testimonies.”
